maddie had her 3rd birthday a few days ago. for me and brian it was definitely the most exciting birthday we've had with her. she has changed so much from 2 to 3 and we really feel like she's a little person now. it used to be that i would love to escape for a breakfast alone and i would leave maddie with the sitter. now i like to take maddie with me because she can actually behave at a restaurant but also because we can have real, fun conversations. it's amazing to me how much she knows, understands, and now, how much she can empathize with people. last night brian was feeling sick and maddie went up to him and said "let me just give you a hug daddy." and when i look really tired she'll say, "mommy, you should rest...you're going to get too tired. daddy can help you when he gets home."
we're starting to see glimpses of the future too...glimpses of peer pressure. before her bday celebration at school she kept telling me "ethan had his birthday at school. he brought cupcakes. chocolate and vanilla. can i bring chocolate AND vanilla?"
for maddie turning three was not only exciting because of all the celebration and new toys. she was so excited to turn three and be the same age as her two older girlfriends. she sees herself as a 'big girl' now. we went to lunch the other day and she didn't try to get out of her seat at all. at the end of the meal she looked at me and brian and said "i ate all my lunch and didn't get up to play because i'm THREE now!" it's very cute.
i have to say, i'm not sad to be leaving the terrible twos behind :) the past 6 months were tough!

yesterday after school maddie and i were having lunch and she started telling me about all the kids in her class. maddie said "emily was being really naughty today. she kept getting time outs." a little later i asked her who her best friend in her class is and she said "emily." great!!! our daughter is already mixing with all the troublemakers. separately she said "...then there's andrew. he was wearing a hat today. maybe he didn't take a shower this morning or something." hee hee.

apparently "The Cat in the Hat" is a very scary book to an almost 3 year old. i was excited to read it to maddie because it was one of my childhood favorites. But, when i got to the part where you can see the mother's legs in the window and the goldfish is yelling that the mother is almost home, maddie blurted out "i don't like this book. stop reading it!!" a couple weeks later she was being really bad about going to sleep. she kept coming out of her room. finally i went in and as i threatened to take her nightlight away, she said "but the cat book is in here!!!" i had no idea what she was talking about because she has literally about 100 books in her room. i left the room and told her not to come out again. a couple minutes later her door opened and all i see is her little arm reach out of the room with "The Cat in the Hat" book dangling from of her tiny little hand. i took it away from her and then she said "take the Wocket book too!"
no more Dr. Seuss books in this house for a while!Comments:Add a comment:

more maddie-isms:
"just go to work or something!" (said in a very annoyed voice to daddy when he was getting in her way one morning)
"where does daddy work? i mean, i know he works at XFire, but where is XFire?"
"why don't these flip-flops make noise like yours? i want the ones that make noise!" (while shopping for flip-flops with mommy)
"i'm in a bad mood. can't i just be grumpy sometimes?"
"i like japanese food better than korean food but kimchee is my faaaaaaaaaavorite!"
